Call waiting tone

A tone advising the user of the call waiting supplementary service who is engaged on a call that someone is attempting to call his number.

Typically, the call waiting tone is a slow period tone, where the On period is shorter than the Off period.

Implementations vary, but typically, a single or double beep is sent every few seconds.
